Us Isn’t About Us

Being a “Today Yogi” (just made the name up), I travel a ton. I have discovered over the years that traveling is one of the best ways to unravel the mystery behind man. Who are we? Why are we so far away from being at peace?

We know several things about life.  First, we are going to die and second, we reap what we sow, we sow what we reap! Both laws are incredible helpmates for us humans and they should act as our guides to go and shape a life that we want to live. Instead they are ignored by most and we live lives that produce stress and strain. We ask how do I make the stress go away?  But we do not ask the right question which should be:  What is it about the way I think, feel and act that produces stress?

Stress does not come from outside agencies. It comes from inside of us. It forms in our operating principals through the way we see the world and ourselves. Our beliefs, in layman’s terms, come from not what we do but how we do it.

So here I am on another plane with all of the above in mind and what do I see?  A plane full of magazines with humans covered by them not understanding that Us Weekly isn’t about Us! People really isn’t about People and In Touch gets you out of Touch!

Our heads are on celebrities, as my teacher says, rather the eternities, and on the Times rather than the Timeless.

The law of causation works perfectly and we are always sitting in the seat we created from our past choices. If we want to change the seat, then we must change ourselves starting now!

Instead of reading about other people’s dramas, work on taking the drama out of your life. Replace your fascination with other people’s lives with a dedication to make yours incredible.

Finally wake up each morning to a rich study of the universal principles of life rather than a dose of caffeine. Follow these simple instructions and you will sow one hell of a life.

Peace,

  1. Thank for your inspirational writing. I agree with everything you said, but I can relate most to the sense of being closer to understanding what’s important in life with my own travels around the world. I find that people who have had the will, privilege, or desire to go to new places are more balanced than most who have not. My hypothesis is that we all want and need the same things in life – love, health, and happiness, regardless what language, food, climate, politics, religion, wealth, etc. – deep down inside, we have this in common. People who have witnessed and lived this see, hear, smell and taste this perspective. The differentiator across the waters, mountains and deserts is how we choose to work towards “it” and where we decide to settle at our own comfort level. The challenge that frustrates me most is how people judge the comfort levels of others. As you imply, take yourself to your own apex with responsibility and humility. Leave your neighbor to decide for themselves what their goal is in this life. Thank you again.

    • Catherine,
Thank you for sharing. Universally we all want to be happy. But we have to realize that true happiness lies within us. Nothing we seek outside of ourselves will achieve this goal: No relationship, no material goods, nothing! We have to seek the higher truths through studying spiritual texts.

  2. Eric, I could not agree with you more! The timing of this blog post is so timely for me…this week I flew back from a business trip with a handful of my co-workers sitting arround me on the plane. My co-workers were comparing the contents of the People, US and InTouch magazines they were reading around me while I read Vedante. In the past I would have been (probably visibly) annoyed with my coworkers, but instead I started to understand that it doesn’t matter what goes on around me. I can block it out and not participate. Eventually the chatter stops and conflict is avoided.

    • Anna,
